Forms of Pashto Music
One can as well comment that the music of Pashtoons is product of the unique
cultural and social life of the Pashtoons. The only impact on the musical
heritage can be termed to be the inhospitable terrain of Pashtoon.
It is very
rich in content and has a reflective style that is rooted in the history as well
as in the ideals of the people. The two distinct features of Pashto music is the
Classical and Traditional.
The classical music owes its origin to the historical movements that has had a
deep rooted impact on the subcontinent. Baba Sindhi is among the first vocalists
who came to Kapoorthala. Pashto music flourished in his school first and then to
other localities.
Ustad Ghulam Hussain, better known as Ustad Ghulam Hussain
Kabuli in Afghanistan also composed music in Pashto.
Just like all other societies, Pashtoons also have a rich treasure of local folk
music. These songs are characterized by dance sequences and are performed in
solo and in chorus. Some of the famous names are Tappa, Neemkai, Shan, Badala,
Rubayi and Ghazal.
