Mehteran (ottoman classical music)
Mehteran is the name given to the music played by the Ottoman military bands. It derives its name from the word musician in Persian. The unique characteristic of this Turkish music is a shrill sound combining bass drums, horns, bells, the triangle and cymbals.
Turkish pop music
Turkish pop music began to take a shape in the late 1950s with the imported popular styles, such as rock and roll, tango and jazz. Later, hip-hop, heavy metal and reggae were also adopted. The most popular stars are arguably Tarkan and Mustafa Sandal.
Turkish protest music style
As the name suggests, this type of music is with a purpose and gives out a message. The most used protest messages have been against inequality, lack of freedom, poverty and the freedom of expression. This style even lead to the prosecution of some of the musicians and some more forced to exile.
Turkish hip hop
This style is very new to Turkish music but rap albums by many artists have been released and they have been very popular amongst people. The rappers have lately become very popular with the younger generation and gained popularity for their work all over.
