Two figures were paramount in German opera in the 19th century. These figures were Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner. Devices such as the leitmotiv were introduced by Wagner. Leitmotiv is a musical theme which recurs for important ideas or characters.

The beginning of German music can be traced back to Bingen’s mystic abbess Hildegard and his 12th century compositions .He wrote many forms of Christian music and hymns.
The beginning of German-language opera is usually credited to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Die Zauberflöte . This was further evolved by composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven.
However Heinrich Schütz's Dafne (1627) can be placed as an earlier starting date for German opera. Schütz was a major figure in 17th century German music and was given the status of the first great German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach.
