Dutch music
The folk form of Dutch music is marked by straightforward bass motives. In
Dutch music the musical line is the bass line which is danced at. This is very
unusual among other European folk. This implies that even though the music
sounds fast, the dances in tempo are generally quite moderate to slow. Mainly
the dances are group dances and not dual dances or individual dances.
During
dances clogs are often worn. But, Dutch clog dancing is not the same as its
modern counterpart. With Dutch clogs it is almost impossible to perform
extremely active dances. The reason behind this is the fact that the entire shoe
is made up of wood and not just the sole of the shoe. Therefore the function of
the clogs is to act as additional percussion. This is done by the clogs by
stamping rhythmically.
During the early half of the 19th century, Dutch rural folk started moving to
cities such as Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Thus they brought along with them a lot
of folk traditions.
A good part of their dances and songs began to get the taste
of popularity. During the early half of the 20th century, a lot of urban
intellectuals started traveling to the country with the aim of recording Dutch
music with local musicians. This was a process, which can be traced even in
countries like Spain. It may be worth noting that musicians from across the
world are attracted by the North Sea Jazz Festival
